My practice is based around my interest in participatory art. I work alongside visual and sound artists to develop and facilitate creative projects and workshops, which are often focused on innovative ways of exploring creativity through discussion and art making. I often work with community groups and thoroughly enjoy the challenge of working creatively with people of all ages and backgrounds.

Since graduating in 2012 I have worked on various participatory projects in Wales and England and I am currently based in London. Working at the Venice Biennale is a fantastic opportunity for me to further develop my interest in this field.

Blue

blue.

On my day off last week I, alongside one Brit, one Scot, an Irish and an Estonian traveled to Padova. Having only travelled by foot or by boat for the last five weeks, getting onto a train was very exciting! We had traveled to Padova for a break from the floating bubble but also to visit the Scrovegni Chapel.

On entering the chapel I was blown away by the colours and light. The frescos painted by Giotto decorated the entire interior of the chapel from the bottom of the walls reaching high up into the glorious blue ceiling. The blue ceiling arched over our heads, and was mesmerising. I stood with my head tilted looking up at the rich sea of blue with shimmering, almost glittering gold stars in complete awe. I still can't believe that Giotto created this in the 14th century. What struck me about the frescos was the way Giotto created intricate details and perspective in each of the painted panels. I could hardly believe that the ‘ marble’ had been painted by Giotto, it looked three dimensional. I spent a lot of time looking at the marble, picking out all he colours;

blue, green, purple,pink, yellow, blue.

Blue was the predominant colour that I spotted within the marble. The rich ultramarine blue dominated the entire chapel.

A Playground for the senses

Venice is an intriguing playground for the senses.

#LOOKING

Coming from a city where I am constantly looking down following the streams of footsteps in and around the congested street and canalways. Venice has reminded me to look up again.

Looking up I find myself intruiged by the lines and lines of swaying fabric, dangling and dancing above my head.

I recently visited Burano, a small island that could be mistaken for a paint box. The rows of houses beamed with their colourful facades and again, looking up I was enthralled by the swaying rhythms of the dancing fabric.

About Sioned Pennant

I applied to work at the Venice Biennale as this is a unique opportunity for me to gain first-hand experience of working in a prestigious and international arts festival. Working at the Venice Biennale will broaden my knowledge of current international contemporary artwork as well as give me opportunity to engage with a wide range of like-minded people. I feel privileged to have the chance to work alongside Helen Sear and to have the opportunity to promote other great and exciting Welsh art communities. What’s more, working and living in such a unique setting will be a fantastic adventure.
